The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Adams School of Dentistry (UNC ASOD) offers the Advanced Standing Program for International Dentists (ASPID) as an entry point for graduates of foreign dental schools who seek additional training and to practice dentistry in the United States. ASPID students are expected to start in January 2027 with a six-month, intensive preclinical track leading to integration into the third-year, predoctoral D.D.S. class during the fall semester of that same year. During the first six months, ASPID students enroll in didactic, preclinical and laboratory courses that will prepare them to be fully integrated into the third year of predoctoral dental education. Applicants are required to successfully pass National Board Dental Examination (NBDE) Parts I and II or the Integrated National Board Dental Examination (INBDE), the standard licensure tests for practice in the United States.

TOEFL instructions
- Applicants must be proficient in the English language. UNC ASOD will accept internet-based TOEFL (TOEFL iBT) scores only. The program recommends an iBT average score of 5 (old system 100-with 20 or above in each of the four evaluations) or above. No waivers are accepted. The score received at the time of application must be less than two years old. We accept the TOEFL Home Edition.
Letters of evaluation
- Program requires three Letters of Evaluation.
- All letters must have a signature and be on the letterhead of the letter writer’s affiliated organization, school or dental practice and must be in English
- . Program prefers one Letter of Evaluation to come from the dean
- a faculty member of the dental school from which the applicant graduated. The second letter should come from a dentist practicing in the United States who supervised or worked with the applicant in a clinical or educational setting or who the applicant shadowed. The third letter should come from someone the applicant has been supervised by in a professional setting. Writers must submit Letters of Evaluation directly to ADEA CAAPID. We do not accept letters outside of the CAAPID system.
This program does not publish a tuition figure in the CAAPID directory, and we refuse to print a guess next to a number as consequential as this one. Tuition, instrument kits, fees and living costs in North Carolina change every cycle.
