The mission of The University of Iowa College of Dentistry & Dental Clinics (UI COD) is to educate dentists for Iowa and beyond through excellence in education, patient care and research. The Iowa Dental Advanced Standing Program offers dentists trained outside the United States the opportunity to earn a Commission on Dental Accreditation accredited D.D.S. degree. This degree will enable graduates to apply for a state license to practice dentistry in the United States. After the interview process, up to four successful, qualified candidates will be selected. The curriculum begins with a hybrid of onsite/online courses followed by a mandatory pre-matriculation summer course, which prepares them to integrate with the third-year clinical educational programs. The course is designed to evaluate and calibrate candidates in various clinical procedures to assure congruence with our traditional students. Each component of the educational program must be successfully completed prior to entering the third-year D.D.S. program.

TOEFL instructions
- All non‑native English‑speaking applicants must take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). A minimum score of 100 on the old scale (0–120) or 5.0 on the new scale (1–6) is required to be considered for admission. No waivers will be granted. Only internet-based TOEFL (iBT) scores are accepted; paper‑based scores are not accepted.
- Only scores from TOEFL exams taken after October 1, 2024, will be considered; scores from exams taken before October 1, 2024, will not be accepted. ETS will report both the old and new scoring scales between January 2026 and January 2028. Either scoring format is acceptable, provided the scores are sent directly from ETS.
Letters of evaluation
- The program requires three Letters of Evaluation.
- One Letter of Evaluation must come from a former faculty member.
- One Letter of Evaluation must come from a former teacher or mentor who can attest to applicant's character, conduct and professional ability.
- The third Letter of Evaluation may come from an individual of the applicant’s choice who is not a family member.
- The Letters of Evaluation must be written in English on official letterhead and signed by the letter writers.
- Letters must be less than two years old.
This program does not publish a tuition figure in the CAAPID directory, and we refuse to print a guess next to a number as consequential as this one. Tuition, instrument kits, fees and living costs in Iowa City change every cycle.
